Third National Review Committee recommended the renaming of the Department of Magnetism as the Department of Solid State Physics which came into existence in the year 1986. The faculty members and research fellows of the Department of Solid State Physics are presently engaged in the study of experimental, theoretical and computational condensed matter physics. Specific interests are given to understand properties of crystalline and amorphous solids, low dimensional magnetic materials, nano-composites, ferrites, perovskites, oxide superconductors, liquid crystals, polymers and ionic conductors, semiconducting and magnetic materials, electronic structure calculations of novel magnetic systems, statistical mechanics and biophysics. We have an active Ph. D. programme as well as there are opportunities for post-doctoral fellows.
