Lives and times of P.N. Ghosh, B.B. Ray, K. Banerjee, and S.C. Sirkar

Abstract

I propose to present a brief overview of the lives of four pioneering Bengali physicists, whose biographies I had the privilege to publish during the last decade in Germany.

Phanindra Nath Ghosh (1884–1946) was a pioneer of applied physics in India. Bibhu Bhushan Ray (1894–1944) was one of the early leaders in the field of X-ray spectroscopy and established a laboratory at the University of Calcutta. Kedareswar Banerjee (1900–1975) was a renowned X-ray crystallographer, while his contemporary, Sukumar Chandra Sirkar (1898–1983), was a well-known expert in both Raman and X-ray spectroscopies. The latter two not only distinguished themselves as scientists but also served as Directors of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS).

All four shared a common mentor: C.V. Raman, under whose guidance they earned their PhDs. Raman had begun his celebrated research career at the IACS, which provided him with the necessary facilities and support.
