Building on the extraordinary success of the inaugural Small Sciences Symposium (SSS) at IIT Madras in June 2025, we are thrilled to bring the second India edition to one of the country's most storied scientific institutions — the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), Kolkata, known as the birth place of the Raman Effect, where Sir C.V. Raman made his groundbreaking discovery in 1928 that earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. IACS holds an unmatched place in India's scientific history. Founded on 29 July 1876 by Dr. Mahendralal Sircar, IACS is India's first research institution dedicated to basic science. Established with the vision of fostering scientific inquiry in India, IACS is home to fundamental research spanning physical sciences, chemical sciences, biological sciences, materials sciences, interdisciplinary sciences, and mathematics & computational sciences. Over the past 150 years, IACS has remained a beacon of curiosity-driven research, innovation, and scientific excellence, nurturing generations of distinguished scientists and making transformative contributions to science and society. The SSS 2026 provides an incomparable backdrop for the celebration of 150th anniversary of IACS, honoring its century-and-a-half legacy.
The Small Sciences Symposium series brings together the global nanoscience community for two days of pioneering talks, interdisciplinary dialogue, meaningful networking, vibrant poster session, and interaction with the Wiley Editors. Having previously been hosted in Singapore, China, South Korea, and now India, the symposium series has established itself as a vibrant forum for nano- and microscale sciences in Asia.
Organised in partnership with Wiley's prestigious Small family of journals, SSS 2026 will bring together leading researchers, early-career scientists, and journal Editors, from across India and the world. The symposium aims to foster scientific collaboration, facilitate knowledge exchange, inspire the next generation of researchers, and further deepen Wiley's longstanding association with the Indian scientific community. The Small family partners with IACS Kolkata to co-organise and host SSS 2026. The SSS Journey
The Small Sciences Symposium series has a proud global history of uniting nanoscience communities across Asia and beyond.
Since its launch in Singapore in 2012, the Small Sciences Symposium (SSS) has evolved into Wiley's flagship platform for the nano- and microscale science community in Asia. What began as a regional gathering has grown into a vibrant international symposium connecting leading researchers, emerging scientists, and journal editors through scientific exchange, collaboration, and the celebration of research excellence.
Over the years, the symposium expanded across East Asia, with successful editions in South Korea and China, bringing together researchers from across the region and strengthening scientific connections beyond national boundaries. In 2025, the symposium reached another important milestone with its inaugural India edition at IIT Madras, Chennai, which also marked the India debut of the Small Young Innovator Award. Building on this momentum, SSS 2026 continues the journey at IACS Kolkata, celebrating both the growth of the symposium series and the 150-year scientific legacy of one of India's most distinguished research institutions.
