The Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science was established in July 1876 on 210 Bowbazar street in Calcutta. It's a national institution focused on higher learning, aiming to encourage top-notch fundamental research in basic sciences. Dr. Mahendra Lal Sircar, a philanthropist, founded it with support from the public in its early years.

This Association played a crucial role in Sir C V Raman's groundbreaking work on Physical Optics, leading to the discovery of the celebrated Raman Effect. This discovery earned him and India the first Nobel Prize in Science.
