Raman Center for AMO Sci.
Raman Center for Atomic, Molecular and Optical Sciences (RCAMOS) has been formally inaugurated
on 9th January 2008. However, it started functioning since early 2007 as the Director's Research Unit.
The primary purpose of setting up this center is to provide a common ground for collaborative research
with an unified approach towards atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) sciences. With the advent of
laser cooling and trapping of atoms resulting in the achievement of Bose and Fermionic condensation
in atomic gases, there has been a great deal of renewed interest in quantum properties of matter and
light.
Starting with Raman's celebrated work that goes by his name, IACS has developed a traditional base in
AMO sciences. In certain specific areas such as laser spectroscopy, theoretical quantum chemistry,
quantum optics, nonlinear dynamics, theoretical atomic and molecular physics, IACS has been making
significant research contributions over more than last four decades. Currently, IACS has a lot of
research and other academic activities in these fields. RCAMOS aims at exploring new and emergent
frontiers in AMO sciences.
