Biodata and Contact :
Was professor and head of the department of chemistry/inorganic chemistry at IIT Kanpur/IACS; visiting professor, Texas A & M University; HL research professor, JNCASR Bangalore. Mentored fiftyeight (eight from IIT Kanpur and fifty from IACS)PhD's and numerous postdoctoral students some of whom are now well known in academy/industry. Born in 1935, PhD Calcutta University, research associate MIT and Harvard University. Married to Aparna.
Research Interest and Publications :
Chemistry of new molecular transition metal systems. Examples include : variable valence and electron transfer processes in Mn, Ni, Ru, Re, V2, Fe3,Cu3 species; azo anion radical and carbohydrate complexation; distortion parameters of d5 systems; spectroelectrochemical correlations; isomer preference of oxidation states; metal-promoted aldimine-amide oxidation, aromatic hydroxylation and small molecule insertion. Publications: over 300 research papers; a few review articles and book chapters; several popular articles, biographies and more. Current activity primarily relates to history of chemistry and includes critical evaluation of the growth of research in chemical science in India during the late 19th and early 20th century. Where required experiments are performed to authenticate information. A few issues concerning P. C. Rây's work have been published and a complete report is nearly ready as a book chapter. An account on the development of inorganic research in India beginning 1900 or so is on the anvil. |
